The Mayor has the power to set up Mayoral Development Corporations to regenerate or develop land.

There are currently two Mayoral Development Corporations: the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC).

The Mayor is also responsible for producing a spatial development strategy – which has become known as the London Plan – and for keeping it under review. The London Plan sets out an integrated economic, environmental, transport and social framework for the development of London. The Mayor must also be consulted on all planning applications that are of strategic importance to London.

The London Assembly reviews the Mayor’s spatial development strategy and the work of the Mayoral Development Corporations. They recommend improvements and tests the efficiency and effectiveness of delivery.
