The Mayor’s Office for Policing And Crime (MOPAC) is the strategic body that oversees policing and crime management in the capital on behalf of the Mayor.

MOPAC’s principal responsibilities currently include:

  • setting the strategic focus and budget of the Metropolitan Police Service
  • ensuring the Metropolitan Police Service is running efficiently
  • monitoring the activities of the Metropolitan Police Service and other criminal justice services, holding them to account

Operational policing decisions are not made by the Mayor or the London Assembly.

The work of MOPAC itself is examined by the London Assembly’s Police and Crime Committee, which also reviews the police and crime plan for London.

The Committee can also investigate anything which it considers important to policing and crime reduction in London and makes recommendations for improvements.
